Trip Fuel Cost Calculator

So I was talking with a friend and we were figuring out the amount of money we spend on a commute to see if it is worth buying a new car for the gas savings. I was using Google Maps to determine the distance between locations. So I got the idea to create this little tool to calculate it for me. I've been meaning to learn the Google Maps API anyway.

DIRECTIONS: Enter the current cost of fuel, your car's gas mileage and a start and end address to get an estimate of how much you will spend on fuel for the trip.

Fuel Cost:
dollars per gallon

Your car's average gas mileage:
miles per gallon (mpg)

It tends to do that if an invalid address is entered. For example, I live on Hill Mar street, at least that is what my street sign says, but the post office and all the online services list it as Hillmar street. So if I put Hill Mar st, I don’t get results, but if I use Hillmar St. I get results.

You may just want to verify the address you are using on http://maps.google.com.

Now if only it were easy to incorporate the cost of the vehicle, depreciation, wear and tear (Tires, Oil, etc.). So you could get a real cost of the trip. That is the number that might wake people up that driving all over is really more expensive than they think.

Nice tool especially for estimating possible commutes like I was testing for new jobs in the Chicago area.

when I lived in chicago, I was driving to indianapolis on a regular basis. I paid a high of $4.63 at the peek. Man, I flushed a lot of money on travel…

This is a very good tool to use. I wonder if it would be possible to create a tool to determine how much it would cost per mileage to fly charter flights as well as commercial. It would be interesting to see what the difference would be.
