Motorola EM1000R 20-Mile 2-Way FRS/GMRS Radio, Pair

So I’ve recently been called in my ward as the emergency preparedness specialist. In our neighborhood we a divided up into blocks with block captains. In the event of an emergency, each block captain will have a set of 2 way radios for communication. I’m not a block captain, but thought it might would be a good idea to have some 2 way radios on hand for emergency anyway. Plus, they can come in handy for camping trips (and maybe even shopping trips, hehe)

Knowing nothing about them, other than hearing someone who uses them frequently and owning several of them say "only get Motorola" I went off to Amazon. I decided on the EM1000R model. It was the second highest seller in the category (first highest Motorola) and the only ones with a 5 star review (granted there are only 5 reviews so far).

What I like about them is that they have a charger stand and can use rechargeable NIMH batteries, or 3 AAA Alkaline batteries. So I can keep them charged all the time and store some AAA batteries for emergencies. I’m ordering today. If I don’t post an update free free to drop me a line once I get them if you want to know more as I learn more.

I run a small landscaping business and we use these when we are doing large yards or properties. Some of my clients have large properties and these are perfect for communicating over a large area. Obviously no one’s yard is 2 miles wide or long but these are great for short acre distances. I would recommend them for simple communication purposes. Regards!

Ofcourse they will not have 20 mile range, at least not in the city but as Polish beer said they are great some businesses. I was using similar radios when I was working in construction and they were great for communicating with other workers.

This is a great way to maintain short distances communication. It would really do well during emergency situations like storms and massive blackouts, when cellular phones are not available for use.

I will definitely recommend these for camping trips, especially if your going to be hiking or something of the sort. Also they are just fun to play with, if you get bored easily like me.

    Hey Folks,
I’ve purchased walkie talkie’s in the past(not motorola) and have been very disappointed. I need a set of Talkies for short range communication in a building 2-3 floor distances but concrete floors/walls etc….
are the em1000r the answer? Some of the schools that I’ve done work in have their own Motorola Talkies(not sure of the model number) but they work amazing in these types of enviornments…or do I need to look at something completely different????

I think you were wise getting the models that use both rechargeable and AAA batteries. If you lose power for an extended period of time you may not be able to charge the unit back up.

Thanks for stepping up to be the emergency preparedness specialist. We need more good-hearted folks like you!

Our family uses 2-way radios when we go to Disneyland. They work great and allows us to stay in touch with one another.
