Technorati Frustrations

Tag: Programming & Internet, Rants, Web SitesDustin @ 7:30 am

I’m getting frustrated trying to claim my blog on Technorati. This blog used to be located at blog.davisvillage.com (it still is for archive purposes). I couldn’t ever claim that blog location on Technorati. Every time I try I kept getting this error:

There was a problem claiming your blog. Please try again in a few minutes. You can also go to Technorati Help >> for help claiming your blog.

I’ve tried everything in that help section, but nothing works. So I claimed this blog just as soon as I got it set up, then I moved my blog over completely. It still does some funky things on occasion though.

I’m now having the same problem with my LDS blog. I get the same error when I try to claim it. I’ve tried a few things:

  1. I deleted all my posts from the database, then tried to claim it. I wasn’t sure if there were some funny characters or something that the technorati bots were getting hung up on.
  2. I tried disabling ALL my plugins. That didn’t work.
  3. I tried changing my template to the default and the classic. Neither worked.
  4. I’ve searched the internet and have yet to find anything useful…

One think I tried did provide some interesting results. I deleted all the files and reinstalled a fresh copy of WordPress. Then I was able to claim my blog! After claiming it, I move my old files back over and reconnected to my original database. CRASH! I still have the claim to LatterdayBlog.com, but after another ping, it doesn’t seem to exist to Technorati.

When I look at the details for this blog on Technorati, all I see is:

Huh?

There are blogs, and then there’s whatever you just typed in. If it’s a blog, we don’t know about it. Maybe you made a typo. Or maybe it’s a blog that doesn’t exist. Maybe you don’t exist. (In which case, please ignore this.)

Anyone else experienced the same frustrations? Anyone found a solution to the problem?

Blogging for Dollars

Tag: Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 5:58 am

Some time last year I tried an experiment. I blogged every weekd day for one month. My experiment was to see what kind of traffic I would get - but more especially, what I could earn from Google Adsense from this traffic. It was moderately successful. I certainly made more that month than any other month before or since - maybe even more than every month combined.

Well, I’ve found a new easier way to make money. I was reading my Gmail this morning and noticed a link to PayPerPost.com. I think this is a great idea for both bloggers and advertisers. Here is why:

  1. As an advertiser you can get real blogs ranting and raving your product or site.
  2. Blogs are great for getting better search engine placement.
  3. There is more potential to earn as a blogger - especially with a blog that only has a small audience.
  4. You can blog sporatically. You don’t NEED to blog every day to generate income. (Of course it never hurts to blog more often.)
  5. You can find topics to blog about!

So why are you still here? Go make money!

Free Xbox 360

Tag: Products, Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 2:09 pm

Okay here’s the story. I’ve seen these links all over the place with people trying to get free iPods, free game consoles, laptops, cameras, etc, etc. I’ve never taken the time to try it though. But right now I’m working on paying off my credit cards. My friend has moved some of his credit card balances to 0% APR cards while paying them off so he can pay them off without paying interest payments on top of that each month. I figured I would try it as well. Rather than supporting the junk mail I get every day, I decided that if I’m going to sign up for a credit card, I want to get something out of it. So my goal is to find 8 other people that want to do the same.

I’m using Freepay.com which has been around for quite a long time and given away a lot of free stuff. You may wonder how they could possible afford to do this, but it makes perfect sense to me. As an affiliate marketer, I know you can earn from $10 - $110 getting people to sign up or purchase certain services online. Getting 9 people to make you an average of $35 would make you $315 - almost enough to break even on the xbox 360 right. Well, consider all those that sign up and get 1 or 2 referrals. Also, how many sign up for the program without being a referal from someone else (whether on purpose or on accident)?

So in order to make the program work for you, do the following:

1.Make sure you sign up as a referal under someone else. If you are going to sign up anyway, why not help someone out by getting them closer to their goal. It’s just good carma! If you want a free xbox 360, please use my referral link: xbox360s.freepay.com/?r=20076641
If you want something else offered by freepay.com, try doing a search on google to find someone who is looking for referrals, either on a blog or message board.
2.Be patient. I signed up for my offer 2 months ago and just got credit for it on Freepay.com today.
3.Spread the word. Once you have been notified that you’ve completed your offer, start getting referrals. If you have a blog, post it there. If you don’t have a blog, you can spread the word on some forums. I’m really not suggesting you spam message boards, but there are some that you might be active in that you could get away with posting one off-topic post to this effect. If you don’t have a method of getting referrals now, I would recommend spending you time saving money for a free xbox 360 instead as it will be much easier in the long run ;)
4.Share the wealth. If you have a fairly easy time getting your required number of referals, (for the xbox 360, the magic number is 8 ) then start sending traffic to those who helped you earn your referrals. So what I’m saying is that if you sign up under me, send me an email when you get approved. Once I get my referrals, I will start passing them down the line, and I will change my referal links on this site to someone under me.

I’ll keep you posted on my progress!

You Get What You Pay For With 1&1 Domains

Tag: Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 6:31 am

I am all about getting a good deal, but sometimes you just need to pay a little extra. A few years ago I started registering my domains through www.hostway.com rather than www.godaddy.com to save a few bucks. With over 50 domain names the savings can really ad up. I did try www.1and1.com to save another dollar, but had a terrible experience with them. Apparently, after registering my domain name, I logged in too soon to change my nameservers. It screwed their whole system up and they blamed it all on me!

Well, recently I decided to give them another chance thinking they must have improved their site by now. Well, I made the mistake of registering a domain there that I later wanted to use as the main domain for vps (virtual private server) account I had set up. There is no option (that I could find to set up my own name servers (or domain host) for my domain names. So I tried to transfer my domain name to Godaddy where they make it extremely easy to do so. (It is somewhat simple to set them on Hostway, but you have to jump through hoops if you ever want to edit them.) But I got a message that I have to wait 60 days before transferring a domain :( So then I tried to contact 1&1 support to see if I was just missing something and if it was possible to do somewhere on their site. After about 3 days I finally got a response with a detailed step by step process on how to edit my DNS settings. Apparently they had no idea what I was talking about. Oh well, by the time I got their response I had already found another domain to use. This time I registered it at GoDaddy.com. It seriously took me 5 minutes to register, set my domain host and have it propogate! Wow, very impressive GoDaddy!

Google Analytics URL

I always have to stop and think how to spell analytics when I go to Google’s analytics site. I now find that it is much easier to just type urchin.com. ;)

Join ING Direct and Get $25

Tag: Products, Web SitesDustin @ 4:41 pm

Right now, ING Direct is have a “rate sale.” That’s the first time I’ve ever heard of the term, but in essence, what they are doing is offering a higher interest rate from now until April 15th on any money you deposit until that time. They normal rate is currently 3.8% which is well above my credit union’s savings account rate (which stands at about 1.2%).

I’ve been a member of ING Direct for over a year. I initially set it up to automatically withdraw $10 each month. The next thing I know I have over $170 and the rates keep going up. They are FDIC insured so you can feel safe putting your money there. It is simply a savings account (although they have ARM mortgages and a CD account which can earn higher rates).

You link your ING Direct account to your current bank account. It takes about 2-3 business days to send and receive money between accounts. I like it because it is just far enough away to to avoid the temptation of spending savings on something trivial, yeat liquid enough to have when I need for real emergencies.

The Winter Save Up Sale! Earn 4.75% APY on new deposits through April 15th. Apply online.

You can join through the link above. Or, if you have $250 to initially deposit, send me an email (or comment on this blog), and I’ll email you a referral link that will allow you to have $25 deposited in your account when you join (and I’ll get a $10 referal commission;)).

Gmail Mobile

Tag: Web SitesDustin @ 5:55 am

Nice, now I can use my Gmail account to read email on my pocket pc at nights without having to continually scroll left and right! Thanks again Gmail!

Now you can access your Gmail account from your mobile phone or device. Just point your phone’s web browser to m.gmail.com. Your Gmail account stays synched, whether you access it from the web or the mobile interface. It’s easy to use and it’s free (but yes, your wireless plan could still charge you).

It also has these cool features:
• Automatically optimizes the interface for the phone you’re using
• Opens the attachments you receive in messages, including photos, Microsoft Word documents and .pdf files
• Lets you reply by call to people whose phone numbers are in your Gmail Contacts list

Use You Developing Skills To Earn And Learn

Tag: Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 3:14 pm

Looking to earn some extra money? Are you wanting to develop your computer or writing skills, but lacking ideas? Then read on to find out exactly how to do both at the same time!

Nerdlance.com is a new feature rich web site that allows entrepreneurs and businesses create projects that they need help with completing. This is where you come in. There are many professionals competing to get these projects. Often, professions demand more money for their services and struggling businesses and entrepreneurs are willing to sacrifice a little time in order to save some money.

You can browse projects in various categories that match your skill set and interests. Here are five simple tips to make the most of your project bidding.

  1. Start with charity work. By this I mean bid low - work cheap for a few projects. This will give you some experience in doing the work and allow you to get some customer ratings. Like eBay, Nerdlance.com uses a rating system. You’d be surprised at the confidence boost a project owner will get if he sees you have successfully completed projects in the past.
  2. Be honest with your bids. Don’t claim to be something you are not. If it’s going to take you a couple months to get something done, be upfront and explain that. If you don’t have the experience to complete a project, say so. Instead you can explain that you are bidding lower so that you can get the experience. Honesty can only reward you greater feedback and more projects.
  3. Speak to the project owner. Read the project description thoroughly and describe how you can solve the problem or create the desired solution. Don’t paste generic bids such as “We are a software group base in …” These bids don’t normally get read beyond those ellipsis.
  4. Create a portfolio. As you complete projects. Create an online portfolio to showcase your work. You can link to this portfolio whenever you submit a bid.
  5. Share projects with others. You may not have the skills or interest to complete a certain project, but you may know someone who does. Nerdlance.com has an affiliate program. Encourage your friends and acquaintances to use your affiliate ID to sign up and you can earn 50% commission on any fees that they pay for life!

Go get started today. Sign up and www.Nerdlance.com to make extra money and develop your skills.
