Book of Mormon Reading Goal

President Hinckley has challenged members of the church to read the Book of Mormon completely by the end of the year. I’ve created this spreadsheet to track my progress.

BOM Reading Goal

Basically, I’ve listed each chapter in the Book of Mormon and how many verses are in it. To the left I’ve listed how many of those verses I have read. Below each chapter is a summary of how many chapters I have left to read, the date I want to read them all, how many days I have left to do so, How many chapters I have to read each day, and finally, how far behind (or ahead) of my goal I am to read two chapters per day.

If you want to use this spreadsheet for yourself, feel free to download it here.

This reading spreadsheet is great. What would make it more helpful is if it were tied to a chart that showed whether or not we are on track. Is our current place of reading in line with where we should be if we are on pace to finish by the end of the year? I know what I want it to do, but I’m not proficient enough at Excel to do it. If we’re ahead of schedule, we’d want the chart to show blue. If we’re on track, it would be green. If we’re a little behind schedule, it would show yellow. If we’re way behind, it would show red. Creates a visual scoreboard, that if printed out and hung on the fridge would be a visual reminder to the whole family of how well we’re doing. It’s kind of hard for a 5 year old to get anything out of a spreadsheet. Thanks.

I like the spreadsheet. I just downloaded it. I was about to make my own, but I decided to see if someone had done anything first…and sure enough. Thanks!

I also enjoy your other postings. Nice mix of recreation/business new/personal interests. I will be reading in the future.

    Andy,

I know it’s not intuitive, but that’s basically what the last line of the spreadsheet does. On my spreadsheet I’ve changed my goal date to 12/23/2005. I’m currently on Jacob 6. The spreadsheet shows me that I’m 19 verses behind my goal of being able to read 2 chapters per day in order to finish.

In the example above, you can see that at the time I was 4 chapters behind my goal of reading 2 chapters per day to finish by 12/31/2005. If you get ahead of schedule, this value will no longer be red and the chapters per day will change to 2 (meaning you now have to average 2 chapters per day to finish on schedule.

    Does this make sense?

You link no longer works. If this Excel spreadsheet is still available would you please email a copy to the above Email address? Just completed reading the Book of Mormon last month and am ready to start again and am looking for a different way of keeping track of my reading. Thank you.

This spreadsheet is really cool. Do you think it would be possible to create something like this for the iPhone? Might become a popluar app..

I love your idea for a spreadsheet because it’s a super good idea but you should update it by creating a Google app because the spreadsheet took me like 15 minutes to download because the program that it’s made with is foreign to my computer.
    Thanks for the spreadsheet!!

Great! Thank you very much. Just what I was looking for, and the “Goal” line as explained in the posts is great.
