Mozy saved my bacon when my system crashed a few years ago. That said, restoring it was really slow. It’s probably not practical to archive everything using Mozy. Just the files that you couldn’t possibly afford to loose if your house catches fire. For everything else, just purchase an external hard drive and be done with it.

If you saw my recent post you may have noticed my note about switching to Jungle Disk. We use Jungle Disk for storage on our online document management software at Scanvo.net. I really like how it works. I notice they were recently bought out by Rackspace so now they offer Rackspace cloud storage as well as S3. The main difference is that with Rackspace you only pay for storage (same price) but not for bandwidth. Sounds like a great deal. It seems like when I bought it about 3 months ago it was just $30, now it’s $2 per month.

Yeah, I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of Mozy. I figured it would work well and fast since they are headquartered in the same county as me. When I reformatted my hard drive after problems with Vista, I didn’t bother backing up because I had it all on mozy. It seemed to take about a week to get it all restored and even then there was some issues. I don’t think it got fully restored then like you said, it was gone after 30 days. Since then I have not been able to back up anything. I keep getting errors with their software.

So yeah, I like how Jungle Disk acts as a Network drive. Since I am using Windows 7 beta, I know I’m going to have to reformat again soon when it is officially released. I might as well just use the cloud storage for all my documents, then I don’t have to worry about backing up and restoring.

I bought mozy when it first came out and loved it, I bought 2yrs for 2 pc’s and it worked great – HOWEVER, if you read the license agreement closely, it only keeps backups for 30 days, so if you delete a file and want it back on day 31, you’re out of luck .

I’ve since switched to Jungledisk for my mac, it uses S3 and rocks. S3 is way more $ than Mozy, but so is everything that uses S3, since it keeps everything like a shared drive.

A good backup tool for Apple users is the program integrated into OSX 10.5 called Time Machine. This one saved me yesterday. I have a virtual machine running Windows and one of the files was corrupted. I couldn’t do anything to recover so I restored my last backup using Time Machine. It saved the day! This is also good if you have a lot of data that is constantly changing since it can take a while to upload 20GB or 30GB of data.
